Behind every successful speech therapy session at Speaking of Horses is an extraordinary equine partner whose patience, intuition, and gentle spirit creates the perfect environment for communication breakthroughs. Each of our therapy horses brings a unique personality and background that makes them specially suited for this important work. Let's introduce you to our remarkable four-legged therapists!

Whinny: Our Founding Star
Whinny holds the distinction of being our very first therapy horse, proving so exceptional that Zach Parks generously donated him to Speaking of Horses in November 2024. This talented pony has quite the impressive background – before finding his calling in therapy, Whinny competed at prestigious shows throughout Florida.
Despite his natural talent in the show ring, Whinny made it clear that helping children was his true calling. What makes him extraordinary for therapy is his unflappable nature – he remains calm and steady regardless of unexpected sounds, movements, or activities that might happen during a session.
Parents often note how Whinny seems to intuitively understand what each child needs. We've watched him gently lower his head for a hesitant child or stand perfectly still for a child who needs extra processing time. His smaller stature makes him particularly approachable for younger children or those initially anxious around horses. Many of our "first words on horseback" moments have happened with Whinny!

Blink: The Gentle Giant
Don't let Blink's impressive size fool you – this horse has the softest heart imaginable and the gentlest, most calming gait in our program. Kindly lent to our program by Kimberly Stewart, Blink brings both professional credentials and extraordinary gentleness to our therapy sessions. He's actually a member of the Upperville Horse Show Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a show hunter!
What makes Blink particularly valuable in our program is his slow, rhythmic movement that creates a deeply calming sensory experience. For children who are easily overstimulated or anxious, Blink's peaceful pace helps regulate their nervous system, creating the optimal state for speech and language development. His gentle, swaying motion often helps children who are sensory-defensive feel secure enough to engage in communication.
Parents love watching Blink during grooming time – he'll stand contentedly for what seems like hours while children brush him, creating perfect opportunities for following directions, sequencing activities, and conversational practice. His patience during these moments makes him invaluable for children who need extra time to process language or formulate responses.
The most heartwarming thing about Blink? His visible enthusiasm when children arrive. His ears perk forward and his eyes brighten in a way that creates powerful motivation for children to communicate – after all, who wouldn't want to talk to a friend who's so clearly delighted to see them?

Phil: The Energetic Gentleman
At 25 years young, Phil brings wisdom and a surprisingly energetic presence to our therapy program. Kindly lent to us by Zach Parks, Phil has lived several fascinating lives before finding his purpose with us.
His career began as an eventing partner to a 70-year-old rider – proving that age is just a number for both horses and humans! He later transitioned to Cadeaux Show stables as a valued lesson horse before making it clear that jumping was no longer his preferred activity. Now at Speaking of Horses, Phil has found his perfect role, enjoying a life filled with purpose, appreciation, and the adoration of the children he helps.
What distinguishes Phil therapeutically is his more concussive, rhythmic gait that provides excellent sensory input. The more pronounced up-and-down movement of his walk creates proprioceptive and vestibular stimulation that can help under-regulated or sensory-seeking children organize their nervous systems. This natural alerting quality in his movement often helps children who need increased sensory input to reach an optimal state for communication and engagement.
Parents particularly appreciate how Phil's movement quality can transform an under-responsive or low-energy child into an alert, engaged communicator. Despite his age, he approaches each day with enthusiasm and energy that inspires both children and adults alike.
Red: The Rising Star
While not yet an official therapy horse, Red is diligently preparing for his future role in our program. His story is one of resilience that resonates with many of our families – acquired on Valentine's Day 2022, Red overcame a broken leg at just seven months old, an injury that can be devastating for horses. Thanks to exceptional veterinary care and his fighting spirit, he made a complete recovery.
Currently undergoing daily training, Red already shows natural aptitude for connection. Though he works with our clients from across the fence for now, his friendly greetings and obvious interest in human interaction create valuable opportunities for spontaneous communication. Many children develop special bonds with Red, visiting him before and after their therapy sessions for some extra conversation practice.
Parents often tell us that their children talk about Red throughout the week, planning what they'll "tell him" at their next visit – proof that the therapeutic relationship extends far beyond our scheduled sessions!
Rex: The Miniature Ambassador
The smallest but perhaps most charismatic member of our therapy team is Rex, a 2-year-old miniature horse who joined Speaking of Horses in November 2023. In 2024, Rex achieved his Pet Partners Certification as a therapy pony, allowing him to expand our program beyond the farm through visits to local schools, special birthday parties, and nursing homes.
Rex's size and engaging personality make him particularly effective for children who might initially find larger horses intimidating. His impressive tricks – including lying down on command and painting with a brush held in his mouth – create immediate engagement and natural opportunities for expressive language.
Parents and teachers alike have noted how even the most hesitant children often can't resist talking to Rex, whose spirited "I want to be the center of attention" personality draws out conversation in magical ways. His community visits also allow us to share the benefits of equine-assisted therapy with broader audiences.
The Perfect Therapeutic Match
One of the most important elements of our program is thoughtfully matching each child with the right equine partner based on their communication goals, sensory profile, and personality. This careful pairing creates the optimal environment for speech and language development.
We've observed that children often make their most significant communication breakthroughs with the horse that resonates with their unique sensory needs:
A child who needs predictability and a gentle introduction might start with Whinny
A child who is sensory-defensive or easily overstimulated might benefit from Blink's slow, gentle gait that provides a calming sensory experience
A child who is sensory-seeking or under-regulated often thrives with Phil, whose more concussive movement provides the alerting input their nervous system needs
A child who needs to build confidence might shine with Rex's approachable size and engaging tricks
A child who connects through the fence with Red might be building the foundation for future mounted work
These thoughtfully developed relationships create the trust and motivation that make our therapy approach so effective. The horse-human bond often becomes the bridge that connects children to expanded communication with peers and family members.
